Serie A, officially known as Serie A TIM for sponsorship reasons, is the highest level of professional football competition in Italy and one of the most celebrated leagues in world football. Its history dates back to 1898, although it adopted its current national league format in the 1929-30 season. The championship is contested by 20 teams, who face each other in a double round-robin system, completing 38 matchdays from August to May.
The winner is crowned with the 'Scudetto' and gains direct access to Europe's premier club competition. Teams finishing in the lower positions are relegated to Serie B. The league is famous for its tactical rigor, often referred to as 'catenaccio', although in recent decades it has evolved towards a more offensive and dynamic style. Clubs like Juventus, the most decorated in the league's history, along with Milanese giants AC Milan and Inter Milan, have forged their legends in this tournament, contributing to its elite status.
Serie A is not just a sporting event; it is a cultural phenomenon that brings Italy to a standstill every weekend. Local rivalries, such as the Rome derby between Lazio and AS Roma, or the Genoa derby between Sampdoria and Genoa, add a layer of intensity and color, making every match a complete sporting experience.
