Benevento Calcio, with a rich history dating back to its foundation in 1929 as Società Sportiva Littorio Benevento, is the main football club of the city of Benevento, in the picturesque Campania region of Italy. Throughout the decades, the entity has undergone various refoundations, with the most recent in 2005 giving rise to the current Benevento Calcio S.r.l. The team is affectionately known as the 'Stregoni' (Sorcerers), a nickname that evokes the ancient legends of witchcraft associated with the city, and also as the 'Giallorossi' (Yellow and Reds) for their traditional colours, which are a symbol of identity for both the club and the community. Their home is the Ciro Vigorito Stadium, inaugurated in 1979 (originally as Stadio Santa Colomba) and named in honour of a key club director.
This venue, with a homologated capacity of 16,867 spectators, has witnessed the club's most exciting moments. Currently, Benevento Calcio plays in Serie C, the third tier of Italian professional football. However, their journey includes memorable milestones such as the historic consecutive double promotion that took them from Lega Pro to Serie B for the first time in the 2015-16 season, and then, surprisingly, to Serie A for the 2017-18 season, an unprecedented achievement for a Serie B debutant team.
This feat allowed the 'Stregoni' to compete against Italy's most prestigious clubs, generating unparalleled fervour among their supporters and putting Benevento on the national football map.
